How we look after your details.

Crafty Website runs on its own server in the United Kingdom. This page says what we collect, why, where it goes and how long we keep it.

Who we are

Crafty Website is run by Jamie Spence, trading as Crafty Website, in the United Kingdom. We decide how your details are used, so we are responsible for them.

For anything about your details, email hello@craftywebsite.com.

If you just visit this website

There are no cookies, no advertising and no tracking scripts. No analytics company sees your visit.

We count how many times each page is looked at each day. That count holds nothing about you: no address, no device, no cookie.

Like any website, our server briefly records each request, including your internet (IP) address, so we can keep the site working and safe. The builder's own record is deleted after 5 days, and the web server's records after about 14 days.

The lettering on this site comes from Google Fonts, so your browser fetches the font files from Google, and Google sees your IP address when it does.

If you send us an enquiry

We keep what you type into the form (your name, your email address and what the site is for), when you sent it, and your IP address.

Why: to reply to you, and to invite you to start building if you want to. Your IP address is only used to stop anyone sending more than a few enquiries an hour, and it is deleted after 7 days.

Who sees it: only us. Your name, email address and message are sent as a notification to our phone, through our own notification server.

How long: We delete your enquiry 12 months after you send it. If you open an account with us, we delete it 30 days after you sent it, because your account holds the same details.

If you build a site with us

Your account holds your name, email address and password. The password is stored scrambled, so nobody can read it, us included.

We store your site on our server: its pages, pictures, forms and brand.

Signing in to the builder goes through Cloudflare Access, which checks your email address before the builder opens. Cloudflare handles your email address to do that and sets a sign-in cookie.

Emails from us, such as your invite or a password reset, are sent from our own mail server.

We only open your site to help you if you give us support access, and you can see every change we make while we have it.

If we invoice you, we keep the invoice details for as long as UK tax law requires.

If you buy a web address

The rules for web addresses say the owner's real details must be on record, so we ask for your name, address, email and phone number. We pass them to Dynadot, the company that registers the address for us, and they pass what is needed to the organisation that runs that ending: Nominet for .uk and .co.uk, Verisign for .com.

We do not keep your address or phone number on our server. What we keep is the web address itself, when it runs out, what you paid, and a reference number that lets us ask Dynadot about it.

Where the ending allows it we switch privacy on, so your name and address are not shown in the public record of who owns what.

For .com and most endings other than .uk, you will get one email asking you to confirm your email address. It is a rule of the register, not us, and the address stops working if it is ignored.

We keep our record of a web address while you have it, and for 12 months after it has gone, in line with the rest of this page.

If you visit a site built with Crafty Website

Sites built with Crafty Website belong to the businesses that run them. If you fill in a form, make an account or book on one of those sites, that business decides what happens to your details. We store them on its behalf, on the same server. Ask that business first; we will help it answer you.

If you buy something from a shop on one of those sites

The shop belongs to that business, not to us, and it decides what it does with your order. We store the order on its behalf, on our server.

What we hold: what you bought and for how much, the delivery or collection you chose, your name, your email address, your telephone number and your delivery address, and a reference number from the payment company.

Your card: we never see it. Payment is taken by Stripe or Square, on that business’s own account, and the money goes straight to them. We take no part of the sale and we are not sent your card number.

How long: twelve months after an order is paid for, we wipe your name, email address, telephone number and delivery address from it. What was bought and for how much stays, because that is the seller’s own record of their takings. Orders that were never paid for hold none of your details in the first place.

For anything about an order – where it is, a refund, a return – ask the shop you bought from. If you cannot reach them, email us and we will help them answer you.

If you use AI writing

AI writing is the “write this for me” help in the builder. When you press one of those buttons, the words on that part of your page, the answers you type about your business, and your website’s name are sent to Anthropic, the company behind Claude, to be written. They travel over an encrypted connection. Under Anthropic’s terms for this service your words are not used to train their models.

We do not send your name, your email address, your customers’ details or anything people have sent through your forms. Nothing is sent unless you press one of those buttons.

So we can count your monthly allowance, we keep a note of each use: which website, when, and how much writing it was. We do not keep the words themselves. If you would rather not use it, simply do not press the buttons — everything else in the builder works the same.

Backups

Every night a copy of the server is sent to Backblaze, in Amsterdam. It is encrypted on our server before it leaves, so Backblaze cannot read it. Copies are kept for up to 12 months, so something that has been deleted can still be inside an older copy until that copy expires.

Your rights

You can ask us for a copy of the details we hold about you, ask us to correct them or delete them, or object to how we use them. Email hello@craftywebsite.com and we will answer within one month.

If you are not happy with how we have handled your details, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113.

If anything on this page changes, we will update it and change the date at the top.
